What are Dental fillings

Dental fillings are single or combinations of metals, plastics, glass or other materials used to repair or restore teeth. One of the most popular uses of fillings is to “fill” an area of tooth that your dentist has removed due to decay – “a cavity.” Fillings can also used to repair and replace cracked, broken teeth and teeth that have been worn due to over use because off nail-biting or tooth grinding).

What materials are dental fillings made from?

Dental filling ( Restorative ) materials include
  • Porcelain.
  • Silver amalgam (contains mercury mixed with silver, tin, zinc, and copper).
  • Tooth-colored, plastic and glass materials called composite resin filling

Advantages and Disadvantages of Different Filling material:

Advantages

  • Silver fillings (amalgams): Lasts at least 10 to 15 years, less expensive than composite fillings.
  • Tooth-colored composite fillings: Shade can be closely matched to color of existing teeth, bonds to existing tooth providing additional support, commonly used for repairs other than cavity filling, sometimes less tooth needs to be removed compared with amalgams. They are aesthetically attractive.
  • They are placed into the cavity layer by layer and light cured. Light curing is a process in which blue light is focused on the composites which hardens the materials.
  • At our clinic Whitesmile dental care We use the most advanced laser light from germany which results in better bonding of the composite and less post operative sensitivity.
  • Ceramics/porcelain: Lasts more than 15 years, more resistant to staining than composite resin material.
  • Glass ionomer (acrylic and a specific type of glass material):Mostly used for fillings below the gum line, releases fluoride that can help protect from further tooth decay.

Disadvantages:

  • Silver: May require more tooth to be removed to make space large enough to hold filling, creates grayish hue to the surrounding tooth structure, may have higher risk of tooth cracks and fractures due to wider degree of expansion and contraction, allergic potential in some people.
  • Tooth-colored composite fillings: Lasts at least five years (less than the 10 to 15 years of other materials), may chip off tooth depending on location, can cost more ,can take more time to place and/or additional visits.
  • Ceramics: Can cost as much as gold.
  • Glass ionomer: Is weaker than composite resin, more likely to wear and prone to fracture, lasts five years or less, costs comparable to composite fillings.

What are the things to consider after tooth filling?

Here are some of the things to consider after post-filling:

  • Mild discomfort or soreness of gums (in case of fillings near the gums) is common post filling.
  • Over-the-counter painkillers may be recommended to enhance the comfort levels post-filling.
  • Sensitivity to air, cold, hot food, and beverages may be common after a filling. This may remain for a short time. Avoid consuming hot and cold food and beverages for a week or so.
  • Avoid the intake of hard and sticky food for a week or so to reduce the chewing pressure on the filled tooth (Composite fillings harden immediately, whereas amalgam takes 24 hrs.)
  • Some may experience tooth pain after a filling. This could be experienced if the filling is tooth high or close to the pulp (inner vital layer of the tooth).
  • Some may feel different while biting after the filling. Usually, patients get used to it within a few days.
  • Follow routine oral hygiene practice of brushing and flossing twice daily.
  • Consult our specialists Restorative dentist In Gurugram immediately in case of severe sensitivity, pain, or discomfort.
